SANDSTONE PATIO Paving

Sandstone Patio: Ideal Choice for Cottages

Offering a palette of colours, predominantly in warm, earthy tones, the sandstone patio is an ideal choice for enhancing the charm of cottages, red brick homes, and country houses. Its naturally harmonious colour range beautifully complements these styles of residences, adding a touch of rustic elegance. This versatile patio option integrates seamlessly with a variety of architectural designs, making it a favoured choice for homeowners looking to blend natural beauty with durability.

Why Choose Sandstone for your Patio?

  1. Timeless Aesthetic: Sandstone’s subtle banding and soft colour variations—ranging from golds to cool greys—bring a rustic, organic feel that simply can’t be matched by man-made slabs.
  2. Slip-Resistant Surface:
Unlike highly polished stone, sandstone retains a lightly textured surface that provides natural grip, even after a sudden Dublin shower.
  3. Versatile Colour Palette: From sun-kissed Raj Green and Mint Fossil to contemporary Kandla Grey, there’s a shade to complement every garden style.
  4. Built for Irish Climates: Sandstone is frost-resistant and drains efficiently, avoiding the puddling and cracking common with concrete.

Care & Maintenance Tips

  • Weekly sweep to remove leaves that can cause staining.
  • Bi-annual wash with a pH-neutral cleaner—avoid harsh acids that erode the surface.
  • Re-seal every 4 years for enhanced stain protection.
  • Winter prep: brush in kiln-dried sand to keep joints tight and frost at bay.

After researching for a while, I chose Patio Paving (Driveway Paving) as Tony was quick to respond to my enquiry and answered all my questions and concerns. His quote was very reasonable for the amount of work required. He was also able to fit my job in quickly. His team showed up on time and worked so hard the job was done in under two days. They explained everything, were friendly and polite. The finished job was superb and they cleaned and tidied up afterwards. I cannot recommend them enough.

After being told we would have to wait for at least six weeks to have a patio installed, the job taking a week to do, and having been quoted an extortionate amount of money for the privilege, we had a look around, and thanks to Microsoft Copilot and Google Maps reviews, we decided to give Tony a call. I called Tony on a Wednesday and by the following Wednesday, we already had our new patio. The lads arrived at 7:30 am and were finished by 4 pm on the same day. The service was second-to-none. I can't fault anything. The team were very friendly and efficient. Tony was very responsive. The price for the patio was very reasonable. The new patio installation has transformed our back garden. We are extremely happy with the level of work carried out by the five-man team. Thanks for everything, lads.

We had Tonys' lads out to install another 100m² of granite slabs & cobble sets. They did a fantastic job, yet again. They are a pleasure to work with, efficient, hard working & always willing to adapt plans as work progresses. I highly recommend this company for all your driveway & patio needs.

FAQs About Resin Patios in Dublin

1. How much does a sandstone patio cost in Dublin?

Installed prices typically range from €110 – €130 per m². The final figure depends on site access, excavation depth, drainage work and the grade of calibrated sandstone slabs you choose. After a free site survey we issue a fixed quote, so there are no surprises on completion day.

2. How long will installation take?

A standard 30 m² sandstone patio is usually finished in 3–4 working days: one day for excavation & sub-base, one for laying, and one for jointing and cleanup. Multi-level or very large projects can add an extra day or two.

3. Is sandstone slippery when wet?

Natural riven sandstone scores well on slip-resistance tests. Its lightly textured surface maintains good grip even after a Dublin downpour. For shaded or poolside areas we can apply a clear silica anti-slip coating for extra peace of mind.

4. Does sandstone need sealing?

Sealing is optional but recommended. A breathable stone sealer helps repel stains and algae, keeps colours vibrant and reduces maintenance.

5. Will weeds grow between the slabs?

We joint all patios with a polymer-enhanced resin compound that locks out weeds and ants. With normal sweeping and an occasional top-up of jointing sand, weed growth is minimal.

6. Can sandstone withstand Irish frost?

Yes. Quality sandstone is frost-resistant and, when laid on a free-draining sub-base, won’t crack or flake in freezing weather.

7. What colours and finishes can I choose?

Irish favourites include Raj Green, Kandla Grey, Mint Fossil, Autumn Brown and Rippon Buff. All come in calibrated 22 mm slabs, with circle kits, bull-nosed steps and tumbled finishes available for bespoke designs.

8. Is sandstone good for patios?

Absolutely. Dense, durable and naturally slip-resistant, high-grade sandstone handles Ireland’s freeze-thaw cycles and delivers a warm, organic look that concrete can’t match. Installed correctly, it will last well over 25 years with only light upkeep.

9. What are the disadvantages of sandstone paving?

The stone is mildly porous, so unsealed areas can stain from BBQ grease or fallen leaves. Colour variation is part of its charm, but if you want a perfectly uniform look sandstone may disappoint. It’s also softer than granite, meaning severe impacts can chip edges, and the initial cost is higher than basic concrete slabs for example.

10. Does sandstone get hot in the sun?

In Ireland’s climate most sandstone stays comfortable underfoot. Lighter shades like Mint Fossil or Rippon Buff reflect heat and remain cool. Darker colours can warm up in direct midsummer sun, but rarely reach the high temperatures seen on dark porcelain in southern regions. For south-facing patios, choose a lighter colour or add an outdoor rug for barefoot comfort.
